Trustee Area 1 Board Vacancy
Thank you for considering service on the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees. The Board invites applications from eligible residents of Trustee Area 1, which includes the City of Alameda and a section of Oakland.
The vacancy resulted from the departure of the trustee elected to the current term. In accordance with California law, the Board will make an appointment to fill the vacant seat. The person appointed will serve the remainder of the term, through November 2028.
The Board welcomes applicants who are committed to students, public education, responsible stewardship, and thoughtful, collaborative governance.
Application deadline: Monday, October 5, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
Application Materials
The application packet explains the District, the trustee role, eligibility and residency requirements, the public selection process, and the materials required for a complete application. It also contains the application form and eight written questions.
Who May Apply
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Reside within Trustee Area 1;
- Be a registered voter;
- Be legally eligible to hold civil office; and
- Not be employed by the Peralta Community College District while serving as trustee.

Selection Process and Timeline
All eligible residents residing in Trustee Area 1 were welcome to apply for Trustee by October 5, 2026. According to California Education Code 72103: Any person, regardless of sex, who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the state, a resident of the community college district, a registered voter, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed a member of a governing board of a community college district without further qualifications.

About the Board
The seven-member Board of Trustees governs the Peralta Community College District on behalf of the public. Acting collectively, the Board establishes policy and strategic direction, oversees the District’s fiscal health and institutional effectiveness, and supports student success across Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College.
