Establishing an endowed scholarship provides permanent, sustainable funding for current and future students. Endowments are invested in accordance with prudent standards that ensure long-term viability and managed to provide a maximum return on investment. Annual earnings are carefully reinvested to support future scholarships.

OSHER Scholarships (California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment)
In May 2008, the Bernard Osher Foundation made a historic gift of $25 million to the California Community College System to provide endowed scholarships for community college students throughout the state. Over the course of three years, a permanent scholarship fund totaling approximately $70 million was established to support students who struggle to afford the ever-rising cost of an education. This endowment will fund over 3,000 scholarships of at least $1,200 every academic year, forever.

This scholarship can be used for educational expenses, including textbooks, lab fees, uniforms, tools, computer software or repairs, or other equipment required by your course of study.
Am I eligible to be an Osher Scholar?

Visit your college’s financial aid office for details on the CCCSE Osher Scholarship application process. Criteria and the application process may differ between colleges. Students with financial need receive top priority for scholarships and general requirements include that you:
1. Have completed 24 or more “degree applicable” semester units (or the equivalent) at the time you receive your scholarship. Transfer units from another college may be included in this determination as long as they have been determined to meet your college’s requirements for degree-applicable coursework.
2. Are enrolled at least half time (6 or more units) during all terms in which the scholarship remains active. (If you are a student with a disability who requires a reduced course load that defines your half-time as less than six units, you are still eligible.)
3. Are a California College Promise Grant (formerly known as the Board of Governors Fee Waiver) recipient.
In addition, the following requirements are necessary for you to remain in good standing:
1. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at all times, according to your college’s policy.
2. Maintain at least half-time enrollment status (6 units or more) to qualify for initial and all subsequent payments. (If you are a student with a disability who requires a reduced course load that defines your half-time as less than six units, you are still eligible.)
While you must maintain SAP to be eligible, academic performance, such as grades or test scores, is not a selection criteria itself.
Is this a one-time scholarship?

Depending on your school’s circumstances, scholarships can sometimes be renewed in subsequent years. You must continue to meet all student criteria to remain eligible for a scholarship renewal in the following academic year. Awards are renewable up to a maximum of three times the annual award. Verify details on scholarship renewals with your individual college.
If I transfer, am I still eligible for CCCSE Osher Scholarship renewals?

Because these scholarships benefit California Community College students, those students who are no longer enrolled in a community college during a scholarship supported year are no longer eligible to receive this award. If you are transferring out of the California Community College system, contact your new college’s financial aid office for scholarship opportunities. In some instances, Osher Scholars who transfer from one California Community College to another may keep the CCCSE Osher Scholarship from their original college. This is dependent on the college and is not a guarantee.

Once you are selected as an Osher Scholar, your college should prompt you to write a thank you letter to The Bernard Osher Foundation (sent via the Foundation for California Community Colleges) for its generous support.
