What does "Ability to Benefit" mean?
Ability to Benefit (ATB) is a federal and state policy that allows students without a high school diploma or GED to demonstrate their ability to benefit from higher education. Under ATB, eligible students can enroll in college and access financial aid while working toward their diploma at an adult school at the same time.
Do I need a GED or diploma to start?
No. That is the whole point of ATB. You do not need a diploma to enroll in college under this program. However, you do need to be actively working toward one at a partner adult school at the same time.
Can I really get financial aid without a diploma?
Yes, that is one of the most important benefits of ATB. By meeting the program requirements (including dual enrollment at an adult school and enrollment in an approved career pathway), you may qualify for federal financial aid (FAFSA). This can help pay for classes, books, and even living expenses.
What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?
SAP means you must be passing your classes and making academic progress each semester to keep your financial aid. If you fail too many classes or stop attending, your financial aid can be paused. Talk to your college counselor right away if you are struggling; there is support available.
What is the Dual Enrollment Form, and why do I need it?
The Adult School Special Enrollment Form documents that you are enrolled at both a college and an adult school at the same time. It must be signed by you, your college counselor, and your adult school counselor. It is required for ATB financial aid eligibility.
What is an Eligible Career Pathway Program (ECPP)?
An ECPP is an approved sequence of college courses leading toward a job in a specific field, such as healthcare, technology, business, or trades. ATB students must be enrolled in an approved ECPP. Your college counselor will help you choose one that fits your goals.
What colleges are part of this program?
The four Peralta Community Colleges participate: Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College. All are part of the Peralta Community College District, partnered with the Northern Alameda Adult Education Consortium.
I am an adult school counselor. What is my role?
Your role is to identify eligible students, explain the opportunity, and co-sign the Dual Enrollment Form once the student's college counselor has completed their SEP. You also play an ongoing role in confirming that the student remains enrolled and progressing at your school each semester.
